Report to ICOR on May Day

UMLP, União Marxista-Leninista Portuguesa,

Comrades,

the UMLP had decided to take its communiqué for the 1st of May to the city of Porto, however, as the weather was heavy with rain and we had been told that the CGTP (Portuguese Trade Union Central - Controlled by the PCP and tamed by the UGT - Yellow Union) had called in the police to prevent any other workers' movements and organizations from taking part in the annual march called by them, we decided to take to the streets of the city of Guimarães, as we had already done last year. We heard from other Collectives that this was the case and the police prevented workers from joining the CGTP march and prevented collectives from distributing communiqués to union members on the march.

This year we took to the streets with a smaller team of comrades, as some of our comrades were unable to travel to the city and others are abroad. (We are not all in the photo attached)

In any case, we went out with the proletarian and revolutionary force that characterizes us, distributing more than 1,000 communiqués. We weren't barred from entering the march and we were able to distribute the communiqués without hesitation, despite some CGTP members “warning” us that on May 1st we don't discuss proletarian politics or handle communiqués!!! You see, on workers' day, they have to connive at the compliant laws of capital.

We had frank conversations with workers in precarious situations who told us that we needed to give more strength to those who work and to the organizations that defend them. Many already knew about our organization and asked us if the Communiqué was “up to date”, as they already had last year's. This fills us with pride because, despite being small, our message is not strong. This fills us with pride because, despite being small, our message is strong and is not forgotten, always making a dent and forcing PCP militants and CGTP union members to debate our positions.

Overall, it was a good day of the workers and our message that the workers must be united to fight capital, that no struggle can be left isolated and that we must fight for the internationalization of the struggles reached the masses and workers who took to the streets that day.
