ICOR-Resolution

Only by defeating imperialism, fascism, and capitalism can we save humanity and the planet from global environmental catastrophe.

ICOR,

From 10 to 21 November of this year, the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) will be taking place in Brazil. Activities are already being coordinated to denounce the ineffectiveness of imperialist environmental policy, to advocate for the protection of the climate and life, also with a militant counter summit.

The greed to concentrate ever more wealth and power in ever fewer hands brings not only misery but also a global environmental catastrophe. The unsustainable development within which capitalism operates is as destructive to humans as it is to nature. It is therefore no exaggeration to say that in capitalism, with each stage of development achieved, the blood of workers and the toxic substances emitted into factories and the environment increase exponentially. Capitalism’s striving for maximum profits seriously endangers the lives of people and the entire natural world on our planet. At today’s stage of the development of capitalism and imperialism, not only the exploitation of the workers, but also the exploitation of nature is inseparably tied to the capitalist mode of production. US President Donald Trump even claims that climate change is a “hoax”. The acute worldwide fascist danger with its denial of the human-made climate catastrophe fuels the process of delivering humanity to the global environmental catastrophe. Imperialist wars and the preparation of a third world war are also closely linked with rampant environmental destruction.

Among other factors, the destruction of the ozone layer due to the increasing pollution of the atmosphere with toxic gases destroys the ecological balance necessary for harmony between the components of ecosystems. If drastic measures are not taken now, the benefits of development will not be enough to reverse the damage it has caused. As a result of global warming, the Earth's poles are melting, diseases, especially skin diseases, are on the rise, as are deaths from heat stress; thousands of species (animals and plants) are threatened with extinction, while others disappeared from our midst years ago.

Environmental damage is nothing less than the imperialists' war against Mother Nature in their insatiable pursuit of capital accumulation. Imperialist wars today are associated with relentless environmental destruction. The genocide of the Palestinian people is also a devastating ecocide in Gaza and the West Bank.

What happened in the Vietnam War is an obvious example of the history of this crime. Unable to defeat the Vietnamese people with conventional weapons, US imperialism used chemical weapons such as the defoliant Agent Orange to defoliate the lush forest vegetation there, which served as a refuge for guerrilla fighters. This substance was also used to destroy crops in order to prevent the liberation army soldiers from obtaining supplies. A total of 45.7 million liters of this defoliant was sprayed on Vietnam’s forests, defoliating 1.6 million hectares of forest, which absorbed more than 16 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year from the surrounding area.

In the economy, the current disaster is making agricultural production increasingly difficult because pesticides and inorganic fertilizers are being used indiscriminately, which not only pollutes the environment but also increases production costs. Other devastating factors in agriculture that are a consequence of global warming are droughts and prolonged floods, which impair production or lead to total losses.

These events, known as the El Niño phenomenon, do not only harm agriculture. The regular flooding in certain regions causes millions in economic losses due to the destruction of infrastructure, but above all, regrettable human losses.

The mentality of individualism, one of the main characteristics of bourgeois society, is deliberately used by the ruling class to undermine thinking and responsibility for future generations. The bourgeoisie compulsively strives to seize all the riches from nature and the exploitation of human labor in order to expand profits and power.

It is clearly impossible to find a solution to environmental destruction within the framework of the capitalist system. It does not matter how many imperialist summits and world conferences of greenwashing are held, because ultimately the profits of those who control the global economy are more important than the devastating ecological consequences.

For this reason, the International Coordination of Revolutionary Organizations and Parties (ICOR) specifically holds imperialism responsible for the rapid environmental destruction facing our planet. The indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources, especially in neo-colonial dependent, exploited, and oppressed countries, is one of the main causes of this. And in general, we hold capitalism responsible for this because it insatiably pursues wealth and the expansion of power without regard for the limits of nature.

A socialist society, on the other hand, has the unity of man and nature as a guiding principle. During its socialist period, the Soviet Union carried out large-scale reforestation of steppe landscapes and the rapid electrification of the vast country, primarily through hydropower. In China under Mao Zedong, the masses were mobilized and trained to create a comprehensive circular economy. Fundamentally they went in the right direction. The “environmental sins” committed at that time were often due to the fact that their consequences were not yet scientifically recognizable.

We therefore call upon all member organizations of ICOR to become active on the International Environmental Day of Struggle on 15 November. The systematic linking of environmental movements with other social and political struggles of the working class and oppressed peoples can develop tremendous power.

We also call on all workers of the world and their genuine revolutionary organizations to take a more decisive stand for the protection of the environment, which is inseparably linked to the complete defeat of imperialism, fascism, and capitalism.

Peoples of the world, unite against fascism, imperialism, and capitalism, which are responsible for the global ecological catastrophe!

Yes to life!

No to death!

Long live the unity of humanity and nature in socialism!
